New disturbance at Saskatoon Provincial Correctional Centre sends ripples through court

Saskatoon police are investigating another disturbance at a jail in Saskatoon.

At around 11:30 p.m. CST last night, police were called to stand by for a disturbance at the Saskatoon Provincial Correctional Centre.

The incident was over just after midnight, and police involvement wasn't needed.

Police will be working with correctional officials to determine if any charges will be laid.

The prisoners were separated last night and held in video rooms in the jail. This meant that prisoners who would normally appear by video were instead shuttled to provincial court. This caused delays on an already full Monday docket.

This isn't the first time inmates have been causing trouble at Saskatoon Correctional Centre.

Last week, six inmates were charged with using a disturbance to escape through the prison's ventilation system. Five of these prisoners were among those who made physical appearances at provincial court this morning. They were all adjourned to next week.

Several days earlier, two inmates successfully scaled the fence at the correctional centre, but were quickly tracked down by police.

And in May, there was an incident involving inmates setting fires inside the prison's remand unit.
