Today is Police and Peace Officers' National Memorial Day.
In Edmonton, members of the Alberta Union of Public Employees paid their respects to police and peace officers who have lost their lives in the line of duty at a service at the Legislature this afternoon.
The president of the provincial union said the death of peace officer Rod Lazenby earlier this summer is a sad reminder of the dangers involved.
Lazenby was killed after he went to a dog complaint on an acreage just south of Calgary.
Thousands of Albertans have served as peace officers in protective services, passenger and commercial vehicle enforcement, as well as fish and wildlife enforcement.
In Ottawa, Public Safety Minister Vic Toews called public service officers heroes.
"No job is more important, and few are as difficult or as dangerous," Toews told the thousands of police and military personnel who attended the 35th annual event Sunday.
