Police probe attempted Mississauga jewelry store robbery

Peel Regional Police are probing an attempted jewelry store robbery at Mississauga's Dixie Outlet Mall.

A group of male suspects attempted to rob a jewelry store in Mississauga this afternoon, police say.

The incident unfolded just after 3 p.m. at a store at the Dixie Outlet Mall.

Peel Regional Police Const. George Tudos said the suspects walked up to the store and smashed its glass counters — though they did not end up getting what they were looking for.

"They attempted to steal jewelry, however, they were thwarted by one of the store employees who confronted the males," Tudos told CBC News in an interview.

"The males at that point realized that it was a busy mall, there was a lot of people watching."

Tudos said the suspects fled the mall and got in a car parked near the doors.

"One of the witnesses followed them outside, there was some kind of a confrontation…the back window of that vehicle was smashed as a result," he said.

Police say that the three male suspects fled in a green-coloured, four-door 2000 Honda Civic.

The suspects were wearing hooded sweaters and had their faces covered, police say.

Tudos said that police will be reviewing video surveillance from the mall.

Anyone who spots the vehicle with the missing window is asked to contact their local police department, Tudos said.

The mall is located near the Queen Elizabeth Way and Dixie Road. Its website indicates that the mall is "home to more than 135 stores."
