Police warn of common phone scam promising prize winnings

2 attempted murder charges for Charlottetown man

Charlottetown Police are investigating a complaint this week about someone posing as a representative of Publishers Clearing House.

Police said a resident received a call saying they had won a third place prize from Publishers Clearing House.

But in order to claim their prize, they were asked to send $350 via Western Union. They were told the prize would then be delivered to them by a representative of the F.B.I.

The call did not come from Publishers Clearing House.

Deputy chief Gary McGuigan said this is a common scam.

He said often callers are asked for personal information or to send money through Western Union in order to claim a prize. McGuigan said this is not the way legitimate companies do business.

Police are asking anyone who receives a call like this to let them know.
