Port Williams fire destroys medical marijuana facility

An Annapolis Valley barn used to grow medical marijuana burned down Tuesday night, prompting an investigation from both RCMP and the fire marshal.

Lionel Rhynard, Port Williams fire chief, said the facility is licensed to grow marijuana.

"We received a call for a barn on fire a little after 10 p.m. [It’s] still under investigation, but we did have reports that the building was used for medicinal marijuana grow purposes," he said.

Fire crews from several departments responded.

"At its peak last night, we probably had about 50 firefighters there," he said.

"It was a difficult fire. When we arrived there was heavy fire coming through the roof of the structure."

The barn was a charred ruin with just one exterior wall standing when firefighters left the scene.

RCMP had been at the same barn last week to seize about 36 marijuana plants. Investigators said the operator had exceeded the quota. Charges are pending in that case.

Rhynard said no one was injured. It was the second barn fire in the area this week. On Saturday night, a fire in Scots Bay destroyed a chicken barn.
