Postal services cut in Grand Falls-Windsor

Canada Post is moving letter-sorting services out of Grand Falls-Windsor, although the corporation says customers should not notice a difference.

Letters will now be sorted by high-speed machines at the Crown corporation's plant in St. John's.

The move will mean fewer jobs in the long run, as positions will be eliminated through attrition.

"There will be no job loss," said John Caines, a media relations official with Canada Post.

"Our employees have job security and we will respect all of our collective agreements, of course. The employees will be sorting other things, like advertising mail, parcels and other things that come into our facility, so we'll have lots of work for them to do — that's not an issue."

Canada Post is planning to cut about 10,000 positions across the country over the next five years.
