Powwow class offered at University of Regina's continuing education centre

A powwow basics class is being taught at the University of Regina's College Avenue campus through its continuing education program.

The classes, which are one hour long, are open to anyone.

"I don't know where this notion came from or this idea that non-indigenous people can't do powwow. Of course, everybody [can]," Lacy Morin-Desjarlais told CBC News Thursday night at the first class. "It's just like any arts and culture right? It's for everybody and it's a community-based practice."

The Thursday-night classes continue for a total of eight weeks.

Morin-Desjarlais added it provides an opportunity for people to exercise while learning about the history and culture of powwow dancing.
