Privacy commissioner steps down

Alberta Information and Privacy Commissioner Frank Work will probe email practices and policies for provincial cabinet ministers.

Alberta Information and Privacy Commissioner Frank Work announced Wednesday that he is stepping down at the end of his term.

Work has been with the Office of the Information and Privacy Commissioner since it was established in 1995. He first served as assistant commissioner and general counsel before being appointed commissioner in 2002.

Work's current term ends at the end of 2011. It is unclear what he plans to do next.

He is out of the province and not available for comment until the end of May.

In a written statement, Work says he is pleased to have helped implement the Health Information Act and the Personal Information Protection Act.

A legislature committee will be announced this week to start searching for his replacement.
