High school’s not just about earning credits.
In fact, proponents of a new program offered by the Calgary Board of Education would suggest it’s not necessarily about classes, homework and exams either.
“It’s a doorway to discover your passions,” offers Sandra Mann, system assistant principal and one of the leading directors of Encore CBE.
Named by students during consultation prior to its opening September, Encore attempts to reconnect with high school-aged students who have dropped out of school or become disenchanted with their education.
While 99 per cent of students get through high school within 10 years, it’s that remaining minority that gives Mann the greatest concern.
“We want to bring them back and help them discover a better way,” she said.
Mentoring, tutoring, recreational support and career guidance are just some of the features offered to a student once they walk through the doors of the Encore headquarters, tucked away in the CBE’s administrative building downtown.
The space itself was created by kids — everything from the designer furniture to slogans adorning a large whiteboard along one wall.
Although new, Encore is already receiving praise from some of the key youth assistance groups it partners with.
“If (kids) come forward and they’re motivated, we need to work with them,” said Sharon Moore, executive director for Big Brothers Big Sisters Society of Calgary. “I think having a wrap-around program is an excellent idea.”
