Racist bullying ordeal ends with family's relocation, mother says

A mother who says she and her children endured racist taunts in a southwest Calgary community has resettled her family in a different part of the city.

Blair France and her family were living in Shaganappi Village, an agency-run affordable housing complex where most of the residents are black.

"We were very scared for our lives," she said.

France says girls, aged seven and 12, were bullied on a daily basis.

"They called them marshmallows, white crackers. And they were planning a beat down," she said.

France says she begged the Calgary Housing Company to step in and mediate, but nothing was done until her story made the headlines.

France says it was only when her kids started receiving death threats that the agency agreed to move them.

"I know if we were a black family being bullied by a white family, things would have been a whole lot different," she said.

France says while she is happy in the family's new home, the problems at the Shaganappi housing complex remain.

"I think the bullies, they won, because we had to be moved," she said.
