Standoff in Hampstead ends after more than 21 hours

A standoff in Hampstead has ended, more than 21 hours after a 47-year-old man barricaded himself inside a home on Highway 102.

RCMP reopened the highway shortly after 6 p.m. and cleared the scene.

No charges have been laid.

RCMP spokesperson Cpl. Chantal Farrah said RCMP are planning on bringing the man to a hospital, but wouldn't elaborate why.

Officials could not comment on how the situation was resolved.

But at about 6 p.m., three unmarked police vehicles sped past the roadblock near the Hampstead Ferry Road and toward the home in question, CBC's Redmond Shannon reported from the scene.

Police have not said whether the man was armed, but officers had set up a wide perimeter around the house.

"We always have to assume that there could be some elements there that the police aren't expecting, or something that could trigger a bigger police response, so we plan ahead," said Farrah.

A number of tactical officers had been moving in and out of the area, as well as a couple of SUVs with out-of-province licence plates, CBC's Matthew Bingley reported.

Police were called to the home, south of Gagetown, at about 9 p.m. on Wednesday, said Farrah.

"We had a call that this person needed assistance and that police was required there, which is why we went. But when we went to that home, the person barricaded themselves inside and that’s why we’ve been actively discussing with that person and trying to see if we could come to a resolution."

Police believed the man is alone, Farrah had said.

Officers had set up a command post in Queenstown, several kilometres away from the roadblock. About a dozen vehicles were parked outside.
