RCMP warn of online sex scam that ends in blackmail

The New Brunswick RCMP are warning people about getting involved in an online sex scam that results in them being blackmailed.

They say they have received a number of complaints in recent months from people — often men — being contacted by strangers — often women — on social media websites.

The victims are then asked to connect on a video chat application and once connected they are coerced into engaging in sexual acts that are the scammers record and then use the video to blackmail the victims for money.

"It is important for people to be wary of strangers who contact them online for any reason," said Const. Jullie Rogers-Marsh of the RCMP.

"There are all kinds of online fraud scams out there and we are asking people to take measures to protect themselves. Avoid personal video communication with people you have never met in person," she said.

The RCMP say anyone who is victimized by someone online should not send the scammer money and should report it to their local police.
