Regina, Saskatoon top national crime stats

Regina and Saskatoon continue to post the worst crime statistics among major Canadian cities, according to the most recent report on crime.

"Despite an 8% decline, Regina continued to report the highest index [of crime severity] in the country followed by the other western cities of Saskatoon and Winnipeg," the Statistics Canada report, which analyzed police-reported crimes in 2010, said.

"These cities were also among those with the highest overall crime rates," the report added.

Saskatoon and Regina also had the distinction of ranking second and third in terms of the homicide rate, which considers the size of the community and the number of murders committed.

Saskatoon recorded 10 homicides in 2010. In Regina, eight people were murdered.

The homicide rates for the two cities, were about twice the national average.

As a black woman let me say, this is typical caucasian defence. since the cities with high crime rates do not have a high percentage of blacks or immigrant population for them to blame, they blame the natives. Well i for one do not belive the natives are responsible for the high crime rates in these cities, i believe the WHITE TRAILER TRASHES are responsible. besides if you all think they are responsible for the high crime rate, pack your bags and go back to where your fore parents are from.

if you've ever been in the bad part of Regina you'd find it is about a 50/50 mix 50 = white trash the other 50 = the rest. I Agree with you Marie white trash should also be held responsible, not be ruled out, but its never all just one side.

I grew up in Saskatoon as a white girl.... The natives yell racist loud and clear, but yet when walking in the wrong area (20th St) while shopping for baby supplies 8 1/2 months pregnant, was deliberately run into by a native girl who proceeded to say "stay out of my area white bitch".. Now, I also had the opportunity to work on the Residential School files for a law office for a few years. Now I do have to say some of the natives suffered disgusting abuse at the hands of the white man, but like said in many comments, many cultures have suffered abuse, moved on, and gotten stronger. I DO NOT agree with the land treaty's, the free money, when we works so hard for our dollars and have many other issues that could and need to be addresses with our tax dollars. As far as I have experienced, when in a 50/50 situation between whites and natives, the natives are the racist ones. The whites are the fearful ones. And back to the article, yes, per ca pita, I definitely agree that they are very unsafe cities. I feel safer in a third world country walking at night alone, than I do in Saskatoon. Regina, I can't make too much comment on, been there once for a wedding and had my window smashed out in the Hotel Saskatchewan parking lot.

maybe it be different if the natives forced all the white kids in a residential school and beaten, raped and killed them...ya see all different colors of abuse victims walking the streets and living day to day...how do you tell them to get over it or could you tell them to get over it an move on,even if they they cant...the only way you'll truely have any understanding of the abuse natives or anyone else went threw is to experience it urself...
ok lets put it this way...supposs i did that to ur kid...what kind of punishment would you want from me,if the country stood behind me and hid my crime for yrs..who would you sue...me,the goverment..and if you do sue me and the goverment, isnt that free money you'll be getting.

I feel for the handful of Residential school survivors I have met...... And most are decent elderly people...... But I think who everyone is referring to is the younger generation... 40 and younger... I know here in Alberta it is very scary on the reserves and that most of the native families that want their children to survive are moving into towns and cities to get away from the stereotypical Indian lifestyle that is dominating the Reservations..... SCARY as HELL..... So thankful I was not born there and my family will never face what is everyday life to the Indians here.... The Band leaders really need to stop taking retreats and step up the saving of their people.... SO Sad and disgraceful.

Its a fact that higher crime rates are normally associated with native populations. Its a social problem. Same as in the US with areas of high black populations. Not saying white people are perfect cause there are plenty of loser criminals out there, but petty theft and pointless murders are normally linked to natives in Canada.

The stats prove it. Don't shoot the messengers and wave your treaty cards at me.

Worst crime city?? Ottawa,Parliament Hill. Thieves and extortionists
    • Gingerella  •  10 months ago
It comes down to poverty levels. Poor people (be it black, white, native, etc.) have more to gain by commiting crimes. For a lot, its all they know. They aren't raised with self respect to want more for themselves. So they steal it from others. Lives don't mean much because they've seen people die from preventable circumstances since they were young. They all have the "must survive no matter what" menatality - which means they can do what they want because life has dealt them such a bad card.

How does an 8% decline in murder rates work in Regina ? The prior number of deaths would have had to have been 8.64 persons killed if 8 murders is the current number.
    • Dayne  •  10 months ago
Have any of you people actually been to West Saskatoon or North Central Regina, or the inner city of Winnipeg? I advise you to go to these areas and try walking alone. THEN you will undertand why Saskatoon, Regina and Winnipeg are crime plagued. Not until you do this can you say anything about these cities. West Saskatoon, full of old abandoned boarded up homes and tons of natives. North Central Regina, basically like South Central LA with the crime, abandoned houses, minorities and gangs. Winnipeg what else can I say. Inner city Winnipeg is jam-packed with crime, drugs and boarded up homes. Natives and other minorities including African-Americans are the main sources of crime. It's not being racist when the statistics are showing that this stat is true.

I am blissfully ignorant of Canadian racism and lack of knowledge of the country they reside, then I sign in here and get a wake-up call to how prevalent it is.

The stats are online for all you people who are too lazy to type in into your own keyboard. You do have computers, you are writing your drivel and hate and all your wisdom on here.

Statistically across Canada the aboriginal people are around 17% of the federal incarserated population. And no it doesn't jump to 55% in the prarie provinces as one, "I got a friends in corrections" guy has stated on here. It is people that spread and spew their uneducated and ignorant crap such as this, that embarrasses Canada to those who visit this site and read your drival.

What is a fact if anyone wants to look it up, is that aboriginal people are incarcerated more and longer for the exact same crimes as non-aboriginal, especially in the prairie provinces.
That fact throws away the crap another has said that "cry racism and they get off with nothing or they are handed things on a silver platter".

The polictiaclly correct issue I find most offencive is our lack of calling a racist a racist when we see it and read it. No racist here says they are one no will they admit their views are racist, they will just say that their views are based on facts.

Well the facts are there if you bother to read up on them and they DON'T support your views. The fact that racism is based on ignorance IS supported by your insistance that your stance is based on fact.

lets keep it simple,,,, if all of those that have a huge racist problem with what the government had done (long term effects),, then jump back on the boat and go home,,,, I have often wondered why you all and or your grandparents (regardless of how far back) even came here, if your own home land is so good,, which I assume it is not. LOL If your not ready to move, get out of your homes and off your computers with all your big brave talk and do something about it all,,,,cowards!!! ROFL

Macleans magazine did a little expose and Regina had the worst neighborhood in all of Canada. It used to be a working class neighborhood 25 years ago, now its a native hole. The decent people dont even go out after dark. It has a name south/central. Im part native and my cousins that live in Regina are also, The native gangs in Regina are very very bad.

I watched a show on tv last night about Canada in the 1950's. It looked so nice back then - low low crime, immigrants who wanted to embrace Canadian-British-Western values rather than denigrate them, people had time for each other, neighbourhoods were safe, hope, purpose, confidence...and today I hear about a 54 year old Canadian beaten to pulp by 12 Africans who stole his cell phone while the law-abiding citizen was walking his spaniel...and the enablers say "Oh, they will change, it's just that back in their country they see rape and murder every minute so we have to be understanding..." Hog wash.

Hate is such a strong word in Canada. There never used to be so much hate, so why do we now?
    • Sonia  •  10 months ago
That's enough already...Everyone needs to admit it already and stop blaming government, social and economic problems and where or how you where born into. These cities have and always will have a high crime rate amongs the native community if the native community does not step up to the plate and start taking care of their own by cleaning up the mess they started and contributed to. The answer is not for Tax payers to pay for more social programs but for the Chief and band leaders to donate to their own communities social programs starting with rehab and having the people work for a sense of pride and contribution within their community. When you have 7 year old native girls being prosituted by their mothers to drunken men to provide for their drinking habit than ask the children, the animals and women who need to be rescued from the abuse that is so prevelant but hush don't say a word because it's racist... we than are all responsible. There is a problem so let's start first with adimitting it and then once again the native community, chiefs and band leaders need to work with the rest of community, police and governments to make change within their own nation because from where things are.... the native community has no Nation because they destroyed it amongs themselves. Now they need to rebuild......

Bunch of whiners. At some point we won't be able to keep feeding, housing and educating the native population. Then we are in trouble because we know that they can't feed, house and educate themselves. Get off you asses, get to work and stop this attitude of entitlement.
    • Oldsage  •  10 months ago
Crappy city council. They should pump up police force as a deterrent and Fill the provincial jails. As the native Canadian population decreases crime will decrease proportionately. Sounds like a bunch of racist BS but it proves to be true all over the country.
