Alberta’s two biggest cities cracked the Top 10 for their risks of cyber crime.
Norton by Symantec released the findings Wednesday, rating Canada’s 50 hotspots for online vulnerability based on malware attempts, bots by city, Wi-Fi locations, smart phone, social media and Internet use, and “risky” behaviours like online purchasing.
Edmonton was number nine, while Calgary was rated fifth due to spending on computers and Internet use.
Rishi Patel, president of Edmonton’s Keeran Systems, advises always looking for a secure online connection, especially when using Wi-Fi.
“With wireless connections, it’s important to make sure the computer is patched. If you are in a coffee shop and three people connect and it’s not, they’re basically connected to each other,” said Patel.
And not all malware/spyware protection is created equal, suggests Patel.
“Don’t download something that’s free,” he said.
Patel also urges regularly installing updates to computers’ operating systems.
