Rothesay teen who fell through ice is recovering

A 16-year-old Rothesay boy who fell through ice while skating in the dark Friday evening is recovering this morning.

The boy managed to drag himself out of the water and called for help before his cell phone died. Emergency services received the call around 7:30 p.m. Friday and were able to locate him with help from the GPS tracking on his phone.

Platoon Chief Kevin Clynick with the Kennebecasis Valley Fire Department says the boy was wet from the waist down and shivering uncontrollably when they found him in the Cameron Road area of Rothesay.

The boy was placed in a police car and covered in blankets. He was then sent to the Saint John Regional Hospital.

Clynick says the fire department suspects the boy went through a weak spot in the ice caused by a pressure crack.

The fire department is looking into that area this morning, but warns it can't say the ice is ever safe due to its unpredictable nature.
