Dancers from the Royal Winnipeg Ballet pirouetted into the play room at the Children's Hospital yesterday to bring a smile to faces of ailing children.
They lifted the spirits of resident patients by giving out colouring books, playing games and even dress-up.
"This time of year it's nice to be around friends and family and also make new friends," said dancer Liam Caines.
Caines noticed a "twinkle in the eye" of a few budding young ballerinas who tried on the ballet's trademark multi-layered skirts.
"To see how much it means to some of the girls to try on the tutus and to hang out with some of the guys here means a lot to them, which means a lot to us," he said.
It was a busy goodwill day at the hospital, as representatives of the Manitoba Government Employees' All Charities Campaign handed over a cheque for $20,000 to the Children's Hospital Foundation and another $4,000 worth of toys.
The fundraisers took part in the Jump For Kids last September, when 145 employees from the department of family services and housing skydived over Gimli.
Back in the play room, jumping and diving were also hot topics, as patients and guests discussed the RWB's upcoming performance of Peter Pan.
"The kids know the story, so that makes today's visit even more special," said Sherry Treichel, a child life specialist. "This is great for the children because it gives them something to look forward to. It's a positive thing and a bit more special while they're here in the hospital."
The RWB production of Peter Pan begins Dec. 19.
