Malibu wants Clinton foe to tame paparazzi: report

LOS ANGELES (AFP) - The mayor of Malibu is seeking help from former president Bill Clinton's arch-foe Kenneth Starr to tame paparazzi who swarm the exclusive celebrity enclave in southern California, US media said Friday.

The Los Angeles Times reported that Malibu leaders want Starr, who led the probe into Clinton's relationship with Monica Lewinsky that led to impeachment hearings, to craft laws aimed at restricting "pap-packs."

Malibu Mayor Pamela Conley Ulich told the Times she had asked Starr, now the dean of the local Pepperdine law school, to gather a group of legal and media experts with a view to drafting an ordinance creating paparazzi "buffer zones."

"We're coming up on another summer season. Let's hope we are not in store for another tsunami of paparazzi," Ulich told the paper.

Ulich said Malibu residents were concerned because paparazzi waited near local schools and followed celebrities home as they gathered their children.

The ordinance would force photographers to keep their distance from celebrities at certain key locations, the Times reported.

Earlier this year a similar law was proposed by Los Angeles City councilman Dennis Zine, aimed at creating a "safe zone" around celebrities to prevent them being swarmed by paparazzi.

However the idea, which was prompted by the relentless chasing of pop star Britney Spears, was dismissed as unworkable by Los Angeles Police chief William Bratton, who said existing laws were able to deal with the problem.
