WATKINS GLEN, New York (AFP) - Ryan Hunter-Reay took advantage of a mistake by favourite Scott Dixon to capture the IndyCar Series Camping World Grand Prix at Watkins Glen International on Sunday.
It was Hunter-Reay's first series victory in his 16th career start. The American also won twice while driving in the now-defunct Champ Car World Series.
Darren Manning was second, followed by Tony Kanaan, Buddy Rice and Marco Andretti.
Dixon, who won this race the past three years, was running second while the field was under caution on lap 49 when he spun in the 10th turn of the 3.37-mile road course.
Dixon finished 11th and took a hit in the standings. He now leads Helio Castroneves by 48 points.
Castroneves finished 16th after suffering from gearbox issues early in the race. Pole sitter Ryan Briscoe finished 12th.
