FREETOWN (AFP) - Counting for Sierra Leone's local elections started Sunday, elections officials said.
The vote, which went off without any incidents despite a violent run-up to the elections, is seen as a popularity test for the ruling All People's Congress (APC) party of President Ernest Koroma.
On Sunday the results from remote areas trickled in showing a pattern of strong support for the APC in the north and the capital while the opposition Sierra Leone People's Party (SLPP) maintained a commanding lead in the south-east, observers said.
Saturday's vote was the first time the people of Sierra Leone got to vote directly for their mayors.
One of the poorest nations in the world, Sierra Leone is struggling to rebuild after a decade-long civil war (1991-2001) that left 120,000 people dead and tens of thousands mutilated.
The National Electoral Commission announced they would start releasing partial results on July 10 with the definite count set to be out on July 23.
