Fri Jul 18, 12:16 PM

LONDON (AFP) - Leading shares closed at a day's high Friday as Wall Street recovered from lows and banks rebounded following an upbeat quarterly report from Citigroup which helped to offset losses in the mining sector.

At close, the FTSE 100 index was up 90.1 points at 5,376.4 the day's high, having dropped to a low of 5,216.6 earlier in the session.

RBS was the most traded stock, seeing 260 million shares switch owners, followed by HBOS, which saw 201 million units change hands.

Banking stocks were higher following the positive news from Citigroup.

Barclays bank added 29.75 -- or 10.2 percent -- to close at 320.25, making it the day's second-best performer.

But it was housebuilder Wolseley that topped the leaders board, gaining 41.25 pence -- or 14.4 percent -- to close at 327.

Among blue-chip casualties, mining issues were under pressure in the wake of falling metals prices, with platinum having hit an 11-week low overnight.

Ferrexpo was the worst performer, losing 24.25 pence -- or 8.24 percent -- to close at 270.

It was followed by fellow miner Eurasian Natural Resources, which was down 64 pence -- or 5.82 percent -- to close at 1,036.
