Canada sends one million dollars to China aid effort

Fri May 16, 5:51 PM

OTTAWA (AFP) - Canada's International Cooperation Minister Beverley Oda said Friday it would be sending a million dollars (US, Canadian) to the Red Cross aid effort in China following the deadly earthquake there earlier this week.

The funds will help provide emergency shelter, medical services and relief items, as well as water and sanitation services to the affected area in southeast China, she said in a statement.

"Canada is deeply concerned about the impact of the earthquake and this support will help ensure that the basic needs of affected communities are met quickly and effectively," Oda said.

The official Chinese death toll from Monday's earthquake stands at 22,069, but state television said the government estimates more than 50,000 may have been killed.
