GAZA CITY (AFP) - Israeli troops shot and wounded a Palestinian man who was approaching the Gaza border fence on Monday before arresting him, the army and Palestinian medics said.

A military spokesman declined to say whether the man was armed or not, but said he had ignored warning shots.

Gaza's borders have been mostly quiet since last winter's devastating Israeli offensive aimed at halting rocket attacks from the territory, which has been ruled by the Islamist Hamas movement since June 2007.
