TORONTO - Canadians began being notified today about payments they might be entitled to in a class-action lawsuit over certain gas furnaces.
The 90-plus per cent high-efficiency furnaces were made by Carrier Corp. and include a secondary heat exchanger.
Payments will be made to former owners of the gas furnaces only if the secondary heat exchanger failed. Carrier denies it did anything wrong, and the settlement is not an admission of wrongdoing.
The settlement, which includes an opt-out offer, includes payments and offers of an enhanced 20-year warranty on their high-efficiency gas furnaces.
The deadline for opt outs and objections is June 9 and the deadline to submit claims is September 8. Hearings will be held on June 16 when the courts will consider whether to approve the settlement.
More information, forms and a list of qualifying furnace models can be obtained at a toll-free number, 1-877-632-0916, and at a website, http://www.furnaceclaims.ca
