TORONTO - Singer/songwriter Nelly Furtado will be honoured by the Royal Conservatory of Music at its annual gala on May 28, the organization said Wednesday.

Furtado will receive the conservatory's most prestigious award, the Honorary Fellowship. The annual award honours artists who have made a lasting contribution to Canadian music and the arts, said Peter Simon, conservatory president. Previous winners include the Tragically Hip, Blue Rodeo, Louise Pitre and Oscar Peterson.

"Nelly embodies the artistic potential that the Royal Conservatory of Music is committed to developing," Simon said.

Furtado, who is scheduled to perform a short acoustic set with guitarist James Bryan at the event, said she was humbled by the honour.

"Music has been both my saviour and statement since I was three years old," she said in a news release.
