OTTAWA - Gov. Gen. Michaelle Jean's suggestion that France look beyond Quebec and recognize that there are francophone communities all over Canada has prompted a barrage of indignation from the Bloc Quebecois.
The sovereigntist party peppered the government with questions about remarks Jean made during a trip to France. Jean also said Quebec City's 400th birthday this year is a celebration of the francophone presence across Canada and North America.
But Bloc Leader Gilles Duceppe says he's outraged by Jean's suggestion and his party spent much of their section of the daily question period angrily denouncing the monarchy as a ridiculous institution.
His deputy leader Pierre Paquette is describing Jean's advice to the French as an insult to Quebecers.
The government's Quebec lieutenant Lawrence Cannon dismissed the Bloc's outrage as evidence of a desperate party seeking to justify its continued existence in Ottawa by fomenting scandal.
