MADRID, Spain - The sister of Spain's Crown Princess Letizia is a celebrity whether she likes it or not.
So says a Spanish judge who turned down a request from 35-year-old Telmar Ortiz for a restraining order against some 50 media outlets. Ortiz argued that news organizations have been harassing her and her companion, Enrique Martin Llop, despite the fact that she is not a celebrity in her own right.
She asked a court in the central city of Toledo to ban media coverage of her except in cases where she is performing official duties as sister of the princess.
Such appearance are rare.
In turning down the request Thursday, Judge Maria Lourdes Perez Padilla ruled that a restraining order would be "legally unviable" because Ortiz and Martin Llop are in the limelight even if they claim otherwise.
Ortiz's problems with the Spanish gossip media began early this year when she returned from the Philippines, where she had been employed as an aid worker, to have a baby. Ortiz said the media have invaded their privacy repeatedly ever since.
In previous cases, Spanish celebrities have tended to sue a particular news outlet over publication of a specific photo or piece of footage.
But Ortiz sought a blanket ban, except in cases where she attended official functions.
Ortiz is the middle sister of three. Letizia is the eldest. The youngest, Erika, died in February 2007 in what was widely believed to have been a suicide.
