COQUITLAM, B.C. - Canada remained undefeated at the under-19 world field lacrosse championships on Saturday with a 15-12 win over the Iroquois Nationals.
Jayson Card of Caledon, Ont., Adam Jones of Owen Sound, Ont., and Mark Matthews of Oshawa, Ont., each had three goals for Canada.
Randy Staats finished with four goals and Elihja Printup had three goals in the losing effort for the Iroquois Nationals.
Jones opened the scoring at the 1:26 mark of the first period for Canada. But the Iroquois went up 7-4 in the second period after a pair of goals from James Cathers. Canada then stormed back with three goals in the final five minutes of the half to tie it at seven after two periods.
Canada scored five goals in the third period and took a 12-9 lead into the fourth only to see that lead disappear as the Iroquois scored three straight goals to tie it at 12-12. Canada then scored the final three goals of the game to lock up the win.
Card continues to lead the Canadian team with 12 goals and Matthews sits second with 10.
With the win, Team Canada (3-0) sits atop the Blue Division in a tie with the United States. They will play Sunday with first place up for grabs.
Also Saturday, Sam Russell scored his third goal of the game with just 22 seconds remaining to give England a 12-11 win over Australia.
Round robin play finishes on Monday and will be followed by play-in and playoff games, concluding with the gold medal game on July 12.
