MIAMI - Bertha is no longer so big.

Forecasters say the hurricane has weakened to a Category 2 storm from a more dangerous Category 3.

Bertha's maximum sustained winds are now reported at about 170 kilometres an hour, down from almost 195 km/h reported earlier.

The storm is expected to continue weakening over the next couple of days as it heads northwest at about 15 km/h..

As of 11 a.m. EDT Tuesday, the centre of the storm was about 1,060 kilometres east-northeast of the northern Leeward Islands and some 1,570 kilometres southeast of Bermuda.

Bertha, the first hurricane of the Atlantic season, is expected to continue heading toward Bermuda. The Atlantic hurricane season runs through Nov. 30.
