STRASBOURG, France - The president of the European Parliament has decided to boycott the Beijing Olympics' opening ceremony next month.

It's due to a lack of progress in negotiations between China and representatives of the Dalai Lama.

Hans-Gert Poettering announced his decision Wednesday after French President Nicolas Sarkozy said he would attend despite the lack of progress in the talks on more rights for Tibet.

The European Parliament has criticized Sarkozy's new position.
