CHICAGO - Northstar Aerospace Inc. (TSX:NAS), a maker of aerospace gears, transmissions and other parts, will create about 70 new jobs at three U.S. and Canadian plants to ramp up production for new military contracts.

The company, which trades on the Toronto Stock Exchange, said Tuesday it is adding 20 machinists to its Windsor plant in southwestern Ontario, 40 to its Chicago factory and another 10 at its Anderson, Ind. operations.

The expansion comes as the company begins producing gears, components and spare parts for the CH-47 Chinook helicopter and Rolls-Royce engine programs.

Northstar said its order backlog is more than $450 million, compared with $372 million at the end of 2007, and the company has received $114 million of CH-47 orders this year.

"We are focused on transforming our growing backlog into production to meet the needs of our customers," said Glenn Hess, Northstar's president and CEO.

"The hiring campaign and investment in state-of-the-art, automated machining centres at our Chicago and Phoenix sites will help us increase production to needed levels."

Northstar's executive offices are in Chicago, while its plants are in Chicago, Phoenix, Ariz., Stroud, Okla., Anderson, Ind. and Milton and Windsor in Ontario.

In trading on the TSX, Northstar shares were unchanged at C$1.92.
