TORONTO - A government-sponsored list of 101 things that most define Canada is adding aboriginal people to the 102nd spot after First Nations people didn't make the first cut.

The move comes after Canadians identified aboriginals, in a follow-up online survey, as the most glaring omission from the list compiled for Citizenship and Immigration Canada and the Dominion Institute.

Ontario Regional Chief Angus Toulouse says it's disappointing that aboriginals didn't make the original list - which gave top marks to the Maple Leaf and Pierre Trudeau.

Toulouse says a lack of proper education in Canadian schools about the role First Nations played in building the country could be to blame.

But he adds it's heartening to see that, upon reflection, Canadians identified aboriginals as the most glaring omission from the list.

Marc Chalifoux of the Dominion Institute says he was surprised by the original results given the importance of aboriginal culture to the Canadian identity.
