MEXICO CITY - Hurricane Elida has weakened to a Category One storm off Mexico, while Tropical Storm Fausto continued to gain strength.

Both storms were well off Mexico's Pacific coast and not expected to threaten land.

Tropical Storm Fausto had maximum sustained winds near 95 km-h and was expected to become a hurricane as early as Friday, according to the U.S. National Hurricane Centre in Miami.

Fausto was centred 695 kilometres south of Manzanillo and was moving west-northwest at 24 km-h.

Farther off the coast, Hurricane Elida was downgraded to a Category One storm as its maximum sustained winds dropped to 130 km-h, down from 160 km-h.

The hurricane centre said Elida will continue to weaken as it moves over cooler water.

The hurricane was located about 1,535 kilometres off the southern tip of the Baja California peninsula on Thursday afternoon.

In the open Atlantic, Tropical Storm Bertha had maximum sustained winds of 95 km-h after pummelling the resort island of Bermuda.
