OAKVILLE, Ont., - The Royal Canadian Golf Association announced today the final field of competitors set to challenge for the US$5-million RBC Canadian Open.
Defending champion Jim Furyk headlines a list of notables that includes Anthony Kim, Fred Couples, Retief Goosen, Sean O'Hair and Camilo Villegas as well as Canadian PGA Tour stars Mike Weir of Bright's Grove, Ont., Calgary's Stephen Ames and Jon Mills of Oshawa, Ont.
Furyk, the defending two-time champion tops a list of six former Canadian Open winners that includes Mark Calcavecchia (2005), Bob Tway (2003), Scott Verplank (2001), Billy Andrade (1998) and Dudley Hart (1996).
Weir, Ames and Mills will headline a list of 14 Canadians looking to become the first Canadian since Pat Fletcher in 1954 to take home the championship. Other Canucks set to compete include David Hearn of Brantford, Ont., Bryan DeCorso of Guelph, Ont., Calgary's Wes Heffernan, Ian Leggatt of Cambridge, Ont., Eric Landreville of Melocheville, Que., Brad Fritsch of Manotick, Ont., David Morland IV of Aurora, Ont., and Victoria's Jim Rutledge as well as National Amateur Team members Nick Taylor of Abbotsford, B.C., and Calgary's Michael Knight.
Calgary native Dustin Risdon is one of five players to earn exemptions through the Canadian Tour's Order of Merit including Americans John Ellis, Daniel Im and George Bradford as well as Australian Adam Bland. The final Canadian Tour exemption will be awarded this weekend with the winner of the Canadian Tour Players Cup in Winnipeg, Man., set to earn a spot into the field for Canada's Open championship.
Four additional competitors will earn a spot into the field following the Monday qualifier set for July 21 at Rattlesnake Point Golf Club in Milton, Ont.
