TORONTO - The Canadian Auto Workers union will elect its new national president on Sept. 6 to replace retiring union head Buzz Hargrove.
The new president will take over immediately following a special convention to be held in Toronto. Hargrove and other senior members of the CAW national leadership have said they back Ken Lewenza, president of CAW Local 444 in Windsor, Ont., to take the helm.
He had long been seen as the leading contender to be the next national president of the 250,000-member union.
The CAW has recently faced several plant closures and head winds from a strong Canadian dollar and an economic downturn that has hampered demand for big North American trucks.
