HALIFAX - Nova Scotia's health minister says funding for the cancer drug Avastin will be in place within two weeks to a month.

Chris d'Entremont says at that time the province will cover the cost of the drug retroactive to April 1st for those eligible under criteria which have yet to be announced.

The Conservatives promised in their spring budget that they would cover the drug, but the opposition New Democrats are questioning why about 100 people are still waiting for word more than two months later.

D'Entremont says part of the reason for the delay is finding the staff available to administer the intravenous drug.

But cancer patient Marlene George isn't buying the explanation and says she is given Avastin following her chemotherapy treatments - which are done in one session and by the same person.

She also wonders about the criteria for eligibility adding that she hasn't been able to get a straight answer on whether she will even qualify for the drug coverage.
