EDMONTON - Environment Canada says it is fixing a signal problem from one of its vital weather radar sites near Edmonton.

The signal from the Carvel weather radar that covers much of central Alberta has been lost several times in recent months due to a glitch with a telephone data line.

The radar transmission was lost for 12-hours starting Monday evening and earlier this month it was down for an entire weekend because no repair crew was available from Telus.

Tom Nichols, a senior official with Environment Canada, says they're now working on a plan to change the method of sending the signal to ensure there are no future disruptions.

But Nichols says other equipment that monitors weather in the area would have detected any major storms while the Carvel radar signal was down.

There are five weather radar stations in Alberta.
