MEXICO CITY - South Korea says five of its citizens have been kidnapped in Mexico. The victims, four men and one woman, were seized by unidentified men.

The Foreign Ministry said the five were kidnapped in the border city of Reynosa last Monday when they were travelling there to seek jobs.

Their captors reportedly are demanding a $30,000 ransom. The ministry said the five were confirmed to be alive through its mission in Mexico.

Thousands of South Koreans work in Mexico, many of them running import businesses or assembly-for-export factories.

Mexico has one of the highest rates of kidnappings for ransom in the world. Many abductions are never reported to police, in part for fear officials themselves might be involved or that they would bungle a possible rescue.
