TORONTO - World No. 1 Roger Federer is out at the Rogers Cup.

The top seed from Switzerland lost 2-6, 7-5, 6-4 to France's Gilles Simon. Federer won the tournament in 2004 and '06. He finished second last year to Serbia's Novak Djokovic. It was Federer's first match since losing the men's final at Wimbledon in five sets to Spain's Rafael Nadal.

Simon, 23, is ranked No. 22 in the world.
