STOCKHOLM, Sweden - A German woman has been charged in Sweden with murder and attempted murder in a hammer attack that left two toddlers dead and their mother with serious injuries.

Prosecutors say the 32-year-old woman entered the family's home in March and bludgeoned the children, aged two and four, and their mother in an attack allegedly spurred by jealousy.

The charges claim that the defendant previously had a relationship with the mother's partner.

The German woman denies involvement in the attack in Arboga, about 150 kilometres west of Stockholm.

She says she was in the area to study rune stones, boulders with Viking-age inscriptions scattered around the Swedish countryside.
