HALIFAX - Nova Scotia's health minister confirms funding for the cancer drug Avastin will be available in the next two weeks.
Most of the details for the yet-to-be-announced program are still under wraps, but Chris d'Entremont says his department will cover up to 100 patients who have been diagnosed with colorectal cancer and who have been prescribed the drug by their oncologist.
He says the drug will cost about $3 million, with the total cost of the overall program approaching $6 million.
He says the program was delayed due to workload issues in a health system that is already stretched for resources.
The Conservatives promised to cover the drug in their spring budget, but earlier this week the opposition New Democrats questioned why patients were still waiting for it two months later.
