VANCOUVER - A man who kidnapped and raped a 12-year-old girl in an underground bunker near Vancouver more than three decades ago has cancelled his upcoming parole hearing.
Donald Hay held Abby Drover prisoner for 181 days in a dungeon he had built under his home in the Vancouver suburb of Port Moody in 1976.
Hay sometimes refused to give the girl food and water and at times Drover was handcuffed in the locked cell. Drover was rescued after Hay's wife called police, fearing he had killed himself in the locked room, and the girl was discovered.
The National Parole Board says a parole hearing set for December 2008 has been cancelled at Hay's request.
Hay was denied day parole in December 2006, with the parole board finding he continues to minimize the effects of his crime on Drover and had stopped attending meetings that are part of his sex offender program.
Hay, who is serving a life sentence at Riverbend Institution near Prince Albert, Sask., will have his next parole review in December 2010.
