WINNIPEG (CBC) - The University of Manitoba plans to spend $100 million during the next five years to improve its facilities, spokesman John Danakas said Wednesday.

Dubbed Project Domino, it involves the construction of new buildings, upgrades to existing buildings and the shuffling of programs and students.

The overhaul will start with the construction of a new 350-bed student residence to replace Tache Hall, which has been housing students for nearly 100 years, said Danakas.

"Tache residence would become the new home for the faculty of music and the school of art," he said. "It would also have a new theatre there, a performance space, for the faculty of music." The university plans to turn the music faculty's building into the new International House for English-language programs and services for international students, he said.

The new pharmacy building, currently under construction on the Bannatyne campus, will free up the existing pharmacy building, on the Fort Garry campus, for the new department of biological sciences, he said.

The money for the project will come from a combination of fundraising, the sale of naming rights to buildings, and government, he said.
