17-year-old girl shot on Toronto subway

Fri Mar 28, 11:34 PM

CALGARY (CBC) - A 17-year-old girl is in hospital after being shot in the leg while riding on the Toronto's busy subway system on Friday night, police said.

Sgt. Bill Richards said the shooting occurred at about 9 p.m. ET on a northbound subway car near Spadina station, which is close to downtown and the University of Toronto.

Police said the shooting happened after the girl and a man got into an argument.

The girl's wounds are not life-threatening, said police, who would not identify her.

The shooting is still under investigation, and no suspects have been arrested.

Earlier news reports had said the girl was caught in the middle of a gun fight between two groups, but police said that wasn't the case.

Subway service was suspended in the area soon after the shooting, and police said disruptions would likely continue until Saturday morning. The Yonge-University-Spadina line was closed Friday evening from the St. Clair West station to the St. George station.

Shuttle buses were being provided in the interim, with service updates posted on the Toronto Transit Commission website.
