VANCOUVER (CBC) - A logging truck driver whose load fell off the back of his truck, killing a mother and daughter in November of 2004, was found not guilty Friday in B.C. Supreme Court.
Perry Pelletier was driving west on the upper levels section of Highway 1 along the North Shore of Vancouver when he rounded a curve and the logs on his truck shifted and rolled onto five oncoming vehicles.
The judge in the case found that there was no evidence that Pelletier was speeding while taking that turn and was thus not responsible for losing the logs.
Pelletier was acquitted on seven counts of dangerous driving, including two counts of dangerous driving causing death. Four other people were injured in the incident.
The truck, which belonged to Chalwood Forest Products, a small Vancouver Island sawmill that specializes in lumber for the Asian market, was carrying the logs to a B.C. ferry terminal.
