NOVA.SCOTIA (CBC) - Nova Scotia's justice department has been ordered to make dozens of security improvements at the five provincial jails.
The Department Of Labour and Workforce Development issued a 15-page report to justice officials Friday following a workplace inspection investigating safety at the province's prisons. Among the 14 compliance orders contained in the report was a call for immediate improvements to security during prison transfers.
The Nova Scotia Government and General Employees Union, which represents prison guards, launched a complaint with the labour department after a prisoner escaped custody during a transfer last month. The prisoner, Jermaine Carvery, is still at large.
Since then, some guards have refused to carry out transfers of inmates.
A news release from the justice department Friday said corrections officials were reviewing the report and would deliver a response in the fall. The department said it would take "immediate action" on two of the orders:
- To share the report and the orders with the Joint Occupational Health and Safety Committee.
- Post the report and compliance orders at Central Nova Scotia Correctional Facility in Burnside.
The union says the inspection report is a vindication of their claims.
