Dozens of rancher's deer dying

Fri May 9, 4:00 PM

SASKATCHEWAN (CBC) - Dozens of deer have died of an unknown cause at a farm south of Saskatoon, and many others are sick and dying.

Rancher Mike Skibinsky is scrambling to find out why.

Skibinsky noticed on the weekend that some of his deer were getting sick.

The situation has since become more desperate, with more than 30 deer dying over the past week at the farm at Ardath, which is about 82 kilometres southwest of Saskatoon.

Friday afternoon, a CBC reporter at the farm saw a number of deer staggering around like they were drunk. One animal was lying dead on a hill.

Skibinsky is worried about more animals dying Friday night and Saturday.

He has asked for help from the veterinary college at the University of Saskatchewan.

Veterinarians there have examined some of the dead deer. They are investigating possible causes of the illness, including feed.

The Canadian Food Inspection Agency is also looking into the case. Officials there said they suspect a feed mixup.
