Tax fraud, perjury land woman in jail

Fri May 9, 1:03 PM

ST..JOHNS (CBC) - A western Newfoundland woman has been sent to jail for both cheating on a tax bill and then lying about the case in court.

Waverly Kendall was sentenced Thursday to three months in jail, during a provincial court hearing in Corner Brook.

Kendall was convicted of fraud for selling a truck for $6,000, telling the Newfoundland and Labrador government's motor vehicle registration division that the sale was for only $1,000.

Kendall was also convicted for perjury, because she testified, during an unrelated Newfoundland Supreme Court case, that she sold the truck for $1,000.

When Kendall was convicted in April, Judge Wayne Gorman described Kendall's testimony in the other case as not an honest mistake, but a deliberate lie.

Once her jail sentence is complete, Kendall will be on probation for 12 months.
