MONTREAL (CBC) - Quebec provincial police got an unexpected surprise Thursday when they pulled over a man for impaired driving and found a dead body in the car.
The driver, 54, was careening down the street in a mini-van early Thursday morning when Repentigny patrollers pulled him over, said provincial police.
It was a routine arrest until officers "saw something suspect" inside the car, and realized "there was a body inside the vehicle," said Sûreté du Québec spokeswoman Mélanie Paul.
The driver was taken to police headquarters, and the SQ's major crimes division was called in.
Police are waiting for autopsy results to determine whether the body is that of a man or woman and the cause of death.
The driver is from Montreal and will remain in police custody for the time being, Paul said.
He faces impaired driving charges.
