Yukon 'thrilled' to have 2 home-grown athletes in Olympics

Fri Jul 4, 3:32 PM

Two Yukon athletes will be competing next month at the Olympic Games in Beijing, territorial sport officials have confirmed.

Cyclist Zach Bell, a native of Watson Lake, was confirmed this week as a member of the Canadian track cycling team. He joins Whitehorse weightlifter Jeanne Lassen on the Olympic team.

It's the first time that Yukon-born athletes will be competing in the summer Olympics - something that Yukon officials say is particularly gratifying.

"We, like everyone else, are thrilled," Vern Haggard, a sport consultant with the territory's Community Services Department, said Friday.

"We know that we've got a number of excellent athletes in this territory ... and certainly Zach and Jeanne are exemplary. They're probably the best role models we could have. And they're very deserving; they've worked very hard to have this opportunity."

The Beijing Olympics get underway Aug. 8.
