PRINCE.EDWARD.ISLAND (CBC) - A U.S. man who was born a woman but underwent surgery and took hormones as part of a gender change has given birth to a girl.

Thomas Beatie, 34, had his baby at a hospital in Oregon on June 29. Both Beatie and the child are reportedly doing well.

Beatie legally became a man 10 years ago. He had his breasts surgically removed but kept his female reproductive organs so he could have a baby. He stopped taking testosterone treatment for his gender change about two years ago when he decided to get pregnant.

"The only thing different about me is that I can't breastfeed my baby. But a lot of mothers don't," he told People magazine.

Beatie's wife of five years, Nancy, 46, had a hysterectomy and wasn't able to conceive, so the couple decided Beatie would carry their baby. The couple used a sperm bank and home insemination. His first pregnancy resulted in an ectopic pregnancy with triplets.

Beatie said that contrary to some media reports, the baby was not born by caesarean section.

He and his wife appeared on The Oprah Winfrey Show in April and showed his ultrasound footage to the audience.

"Different is normal and love makes a family. And that's all that matters," he said during the interview.
